Australia and India have signed an agreement to make travelling to and from the UK easier for foreign students.
The deal, announced in February, will allow students to stay at the same hostel in the UK, but not be forced to leave the country.
Students from Australia and the US will be able to stay in the same university and will be allowed to continue studying there even if they go to another university in India.
The agreement has been hailed as a “win-win” for both countries.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, said in a statement the agreement was “an important milestone in the journey of the Australian-India relationship”.
“This agreement ensures that Australian students will be at the heart of any future development and helps our Indian friends and colleagues continue to enjoy the benefits of an Australian education,” Mr Abbott said.
“It also helps to create a greater sense of community and support in Australia, and will enable more Australians to visit and work in India, making their home here more welcoming.”
The agreement also gives the Commonwealth an opportunity to expand visa-free travel to the UK for those from India, who are already allowed to visit Australia.
“It’s a great deal for the UK as we all look forward to a much better future,” Mr Corbyn said.
He said that with the agreement, the UK was now “making India its home”, adding: “There is no better place for a British family to settle than the UK.”
The UK is expected to offer students visas, allowing them to stay permanently in the country and working for a few months.
Students from India will also be able study in the United States, although they will not be able travel to Australia without a visa.
In the UK’s biggest cities, such as London, Birmingham and Manchester, there will be more options to study and work than in India’s big cities.
India’s education minister said the deal was a “historic moment” for the country, which has seen thousands of students from India studying in the US and Europe.
Speaking on Friday, Minister of State for Education Jitendra Singh said the agreement would make Indian universities more attractive to students from around the world.
The agreement is a significant milestone in our relationship, he said.
It’s a win-win.
Students and teachers from India and the UK can continue to work together in our universities, he added.
Mr Singh said India had already started to improve its relations with the US, and that the agreement had been signed at the request of President Trump.
It is a positive step for India, he told ABC Radio.
This is a very good outcome for India and it is a win for us, he concluded.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the agreement as a victory for India.
We have been in close contact with the Indian Government, which is a great honour for India to have signed this deal, he tweeted.
Prime Minister Johnson has been campaigning to bring more Indian students into the UK.
A spokesperson for Mr Johnson said the Prime Minister was pleased to see the UK being the first country in the world to sign the agreement.
Earlier this month, the Prime Minster announced the government would start building a new high-speed railway between London and India’s capital, Delhi.
But Mr Johnson has also expressed concern over a recent increase in the number of Indians working in Britain, saying the issue had become too complicated to resolve.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Theresa May signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen ties and investment in the coming years.
They signed the agreement on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in the capital, London, on Friday.
There will be no further restrictions on the movement of Indian students to the United Kingdom.
An official from the Home Office told The Independent that the UK will remain the only country in Europe which will not allow Indian students from the country to study in Britain.
Ms Singh said there would be no increase in student numbers from India.
“India has always welcomed students and we will continue to do so,” she said.
The deal comes as India is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games in the future, with the government seeking to expand the number, and the number and quality of Indian education and science teachers.
Britain has a record of allowing students from countries in Africa and the Middle East to study, with many universities now admitting students from those countries.
